The Virtue of Accountability

Accountability is, by definition, the fact or condition of being accountable; responsibility.

Lately it seems that accountability is perhaps the most misunderstood business concept . I think it’s because most people associate accountability with consequences. Whenever you hear the word “accountable” it is associated with bad behavior, poor performance and many times negative consequences. No wonder most people try to avoid accountability!

Accountability actually refers to the obligation or willingness to accept responsibility for one’s own actions. When a person accepts responsibility, that person is committed to producing positive results. I’ve heard some people call it “taking ownership.”

When we are held accountable, we understand and accept the consequences of our actions for the areas in which we assume responsibility. When roles are clear and people are held accountable, work gets done efficiently and effectively.

Constructive change and learning is most possible when there is accountability. When roles are not clear and people are not held accountable, work does not get done properly, and true learning is not possible.

I have to say this is a virtue that I admire in others. I enjoy people who actually take responsibility for their own actions, not blaming others for their mistakes, not making excuses for things for which they are responsible and not procrastinating in doing their jobs.

It is a character trait, a life attitude, a willingness to own our actions and results regardless of the circumstances. The very essence of accountability lies in the understanding that each and every one of us has freedom of choice.

It is this freedom of choice which is the foundation of accountability. Take ownership of your goals, plans, actions & results.
