How To Be More Playful In Life

We start seeing more joy around us when we begin to see life as a playful experiment…

In order to be a more joyful person, to be someone who experiences gratitude on a daily basis, someone who’s natural personality setpoint is happy, joyful and positive, we’ve got to incorporate playfulness. Because spontaneity, playfulness and whimsy combines to make a more joyful person.

How can you add more playfulness to your every life to increase your joy?

Loosen up. We are on a floating blue ball in the middle of a galaxy. Is that crazy or what? It’s vital to remember how insignificant we are. This can be a beautiful reminder to have more fun, to enjoy life and to liberate yourself from the demands of taking life too seriously. It can actually take some weight off your shoulders when those expectations are taken away.

Allow yourself to play. When you are confronted with a task, ask yourself this question; what is the most fun way that I can think of doing this right now? Allow the answers to flow up within you — don’t rationally think about it too hard. Of the options that you come up with, what feels like the path of least resistance? Go that way — the way that feels more natural.

Do not limit yourself. Remain childlike in your wonder and your openness to life in the way that you look at things. Don’t be childish (immature, irresponsible, not paying your bills on time, not practicing self-care).

Create boundaries with the people in your life. We so often fear external expectations from other people. What will they think of us? Will people think that we are immature; that we’re childish? That we are not acting like grownups? There is a balance we need to strike between remaining childlike in our wonder and our openness and our joy for living and being responsible. We focus too much on the expectations of what the people in our lives think of us. We have to learn to slow that down.

Make room for spontaneity. Try taking a different commute to work. Ask your partner or friend to spontaneously meet you somewhere with only an hour’s notice. How about meeting your partner at an unexpected place for a date night? Make last minute plans, walk down a path that you’ve never walked down before. Look for the playful moments where you can change up your routine or change up your schedule. Any opportunity you find where you could change things up, go for it. It’s a great way to make life feel more adventurous.

Change up the way you dressTry different looks on different days. Wear what you feel is most flattering and confident.

Treat life as an experiment. Treat your time on Earth as a playful experiment where you can throw all the paint on the canvas and just see what sticks. See what feels good to you and stick with it. If it doesn’t, move on.

Try different hobbies, different styles, different foodsIt’s so easy to get stuck in our comfort zones and not venture out and try something new.

Find one thing every day that adds a little bit of newness. When you laugh and have fun, you are able to relax and this lets new ideas and inspiration flow.

When we believe that life is just one big playful experiment, we will realize that the good life is truly here and now.
