How To Shake Up Your Life After 50

Feeling like you’re stuck in neutral? Do you ever wish for more?

After days or weeks of feeling grumpy, short-tempered, sleepless and maybe even depression — it’s a sign that something has to change in your life.

You are not alone. We all find ourselves feeling like this at one time or another. But there is good news! There are ways to shake up your life and I want to share some of them with you…

Make changes in your routine. Brush your teeth with your left hand (if you’re righthanded) or the other way around. Take a different route to work. Read a genre of book you don’t normally read. Go to the movies in the afternoon instead of in the evening. Do something a little different that makes you feel a little uncomfortable.

We tend to get into routines that get comfortable. Doing things differently gives you a sense of empowerment — that you are in control of your life. This is a chance to expand the way that you engage with the world.

Do a life inventory. Determine what you love to do and what you do for other people just because you’ve always done it. Take a piece of paper and draw a line down the middle and, on one side, write the things you like to do and on the other write the things that are not interesting to you or not beneficial to your life.

Look at the list and decide what are the things that you can change. Be very specific. Maybe you don’t enjoy going for walks because you live in a city with traffic, but perhaps you would like to hike in nature. If you don’t enjoy doing something, decide how you can change it. If you like it, decide how you can do more of it. You’ll be surprised how much these minor adjustments can work their way into larger areas of your life.

The key word here is “decide”. It’s your choice, your decision about how you want to shake up your world. If you’re looking for different outcomes, you have to do different things.

Control what you can control. It’s important to not crave the things you can’t control. If you’re craving going on a world cruise for three months but don’t have $40,000 and can’t take the time off work to do it, don’t crave it. You’ve got to let it go. And that’s difficult. Knowing what you can control puts the things that you can do in focus.

Add something new to your life. Sign up for a class on something you’ve been interested in but never done before. You might be interested in learning a new skill. There are online classes available now for hundreds of thousands of subjects. Many of them are free.

Let something go. Look at your list and decide what you can do without. Let the things that aren’t ultimately important go.

Change can be scary but it’s a catalyst for growth. Don’t be so hard on yourself. It’s OK to shake up things a bit.

I hope these tips encourage you to find the happiness that you deserve.
